manager, Sensory - Research & Development Starbucks - Seattle, WA

Job Summary and Mission 

This job contributes to Starbucks success by obtaining accurate product and consumer testing data and providing recommendations that ensure optimized product acceptance and on-going product quality. The job scope covers all aspects of sensory science, experimental design, quality evaluator sensory training, and shelf life from a product focused perspective. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guidance principles. 

Summary of Key Responsibilities 

Responsibilities/oversight for essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership – setting goals for the work group, developing organizational capability, and modeling how we work together:

· Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the immediate team of direct reports promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership and teamwork to achieve business results

· Supports the implementation of company programs to ensure the success of the Company

Planning and Execution – Developing strategic and operational plans for the work group, managing execution and measuring results:

· Prepares, communicates and educates client groups and team on changes in policies and practices within the organization

· Plans and manages work activities for the function to ensure that programs are aligned with the sensory strategy and company business goals and objectives.

Business Requirements – providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:

· Develop and test methodologies and tools to support Starbucks product portfolio needs.

o Propose, recommend and conduct scientifically based quantitative product research that supports business-based decisions and initiatives. Propose, recommend and conduct testing to direct product development processes. Analyze data using a variety of advanced computational and statistical methodologies to arrive at conclusions. Reports on findings and make recommendations to customer groups. 

o Explore new research methodologies that answer difficult questions that traditional methods are unable to accommodate (i.e. design of experiments, preference mapping, and methods to support innovation). 

· Organizes and directs work activities of technical individual contributors

o Train and coach all reporting partners in sensory and analysis techniques to assist in their professional growth

o Develop work plans and cross-functional responsibilities

o Establish key technical performance indicators and measures to ensure progress against agreed deliverables and timelines.

· Oversee and ensure the protocols for Sensory Evaluator training program at Starbucks Enterprise plants/ co-man/ and at the SSC are appropriate and successfully implemented

· Management and ownership of documentation 

· Build and maintain relationships with assigned Joint Venture partners, internal support functions and professional associations. 

· Organize and manage external testing program

Partner Development and Team building – Providing partners with coaching, feedback, and development opportunities and building effective teams:

· Build career development paths and succession plan

· Challenges and inspires partners to achieve business results

· Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews

· Develops teams and partnerships aligned with Starbucks guiding principles

· Ensures partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements

· Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partner, business and customer results.

Qualification

Summary of Experience 

· Sensory training and test execution for a food or beverage company/supplier. (10 years)

· Advance analytics and designing experiments using statistical software. (10 years)

· Product development experience in food/beverage preferred. 

· Project management. (10 years)

· Management, including building and leading cross-functional teams. (5 years)

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

· Strong knowledge of theoretical and practical sensory and consumer research skills and well known in the discipline as the subject matter expert.

· Ability to extract and apply data from various databases.

· Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities

· Project management skills

· Decision making skills

· Ability to set priorities and meet objectives in a fast-paced environment.

· Ability to use computers and related software (Sensory and Statistical software), including word processing and spreadsheets for data analysis and monitoring (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)

· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

· Ability to work with cross-functional teams

· Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization. With effective presentation skills

· Strong 0rganizational skills

· Ability to be an ambassador of the Company to current and potential internal and external partners, clients, and customers. 

· Having the flexibility to do what it takes to achieve team/group goals.
