Ship Superintendent Teekay Corporation - Singapore

The Ship Superintendent has ultimate responsibility and accountability for the safe, environmentally sound, efficient, and cost effective performance of the ships and personnel assigned to him/her. On the ships assigned to him, he is responsible for:
1) Ensuring that technical and administrative support is provided.
2) Empowering his team, both ashore and onboard the ships, and providing them with necessary authority to fulfill their roles.
3) Advising and updating the Fleet Director with relevant information regarding the ship's operations.
4) To liaise with the other departments as necessary on operational matter.
5) To ensure that the ships are being managed in a safe, environmentally sound and cost effective manner in accordance with the terms of the Company's Safety Management System and any other criteria necessary for compliance with relevant regulatory bodies.
6) To properly close all vetting, audit and investigation observations to prevent recurrence.
7) To monitor and control the expenditure and budget.

Responsibilities:
  • Hold Safety and Environmental protection as a value

  • Anticipate & drive assigned vessel operational requirements, including:

        Ø Dry-dock and major repairs
        Ø Scheduled and unscheduled maintenance repairs
        Ø Operating expenditure.
        Ø Survey and audit requirements (Internal & External)
        Ø Development of vessel budgets and control of costs
        Ø Strategies in place for maintaining appropriate certification.
        Ø Endorse the appropriate manning appointments on assigned vessels with Marine HR Resources.

  • Provide Technical and Operational support and guidance to assigned vessels

  • Ensure timely and cost effective supply of stores and spares

  • Arrange attendance of service engineers and contractors and consult manufacturers for specialist advice and guidance where required

  • Set goals and expectations and coach and develop Masters, Chief Engineers and direct reports ashore in line with Competence Management and Performance Management objectives

  • Take part in interviews and make recommendations in respect to new-hires and promotes

  • Frequently monitor the vessels survey cycle and arrange class surveys accordingly

  • Coordinate with relevant shore based resources to support the vessels

  • Check the status of pending defects such as inspection findings, audit findings etc

  • Ensure frequent interaction with ships staff including conducting operational calls with the vessels senior management team

  • Monitor the vessels defect list for upcoming drydocks

  • Arrangement of all dry-dock activities including yard supervision and analysis of costs

  • Reporting Technical and Operational issues appropriately

  • Conducting and working with ships staff in preparation for vetting and port state inspections

  • Coordinate and agree vessel audits and onboard training

  • Act as the Main TML contact for commercial and voyage coordination for assigned vessels

  • Ensure all statutory and class certification remains valid and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards

  • Carry out regular Risk reviews for vessel operations and ensure appropriate actions are taken

  • Monitor vessel planned maintenance and ensure actions are taken

  • Carry out regular vessel visits to verify condition and compliance with Teekay Operating Standards

  • Provide Senior Management with Vessel Condition reports

  • Review assigned vessels operational and mechanical performance and ensure follow up action

  • Monitor results of all vetting inspections, internal and external audits. Ensure follow-up on findings and close outs

  • Monitor all voyages to ensure balance of safety, economics and customer satisfaction

  • Review purchasing performance and drive improvements

  • Investigate incidents occurring on vessels

  • Review permits to work and give go ahead for work to be done when deemed safe

  • Ensure vessels maintain adequate stocks of critical spare parts

  • Ensure that Masters and Chief Engineers drive People Performance, through appropriate systems

  • Conduct Performance reviews with direct reports

  • Monitor budgetary status and keep all stakeholders informed

  • Analyze the nature and cause of any serious breakdown or damages

  • Provide key learning following completion of dry-docking and major repairs of assigned vessels

  • Act upon any disciplinary actions needed on board assigned vessels

  • Ensure vessels Senior Officer Teams are in place on board and drive ownership through paired reliefs

Desired Skills and Experience

    • Must have sailed as a Chief Engineer aboard tankers.
    • Min 4 years shore based experience working as a Technical Superintendent or in a similar role.
    • Min 10 years sea going experience
    • Experience of dry docking tankers is desirable.
    • Experience on gas and chemical tankers will be seen as an added advantage.
    • Preferably education and experience as a Marine Engineer.
    • Analytical problem solving, time management, project management and decision making skills.
    • Demonstrates teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Must have strong understanding of Technical, Operational and HSEQ Matters.
