Mechanical Design Engineer INEOS - Falkirk, United Kingdom

To be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Mechanical Standards and Processes/Procedures within the Integrity Services function in supporting Asset, TAR and Projects businesses in delivering legal compliance and achieving INEOS business goals.

Dimensions
  • Be the Subject Matter Expert for mechanical (vessels, equipment and piping) related queries, concessions and resolution of mechanical issues.
  • Deliver mechanical engineering technical support service to all the INEOS Grangemouth businesses. This includes Projects, Assets and TAR support.
  • Provide mechanical engineering support to the Site Procurement Team Supplier Assurance Process.
  • Maintain the Mechanical Standards which describe the organisation and management of key technical requirements for mechanical plant and systems on behalf of the Grangemouth Businesses.
  • Provide technical assessment of new providers of mechanical plant and systems and the audit of existing.
Principal Accountabilities
  1. Acting as the Mechanical Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the Integrity Specialists team, develop and deliver a mechanical engineering strategy to comply with the law and achieve Grangemouth business goals for HSE, multi discipline     process safety, containment and reliability.
  2. Develop, implement and sustain Mechanical Standards to reflect changes in the law and which achieve business goals for asset integrity and delivers new, modified or repaired equipment to the required engineering standards. This role includes      liaison with other relevant Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and the Site Compliance Team to ensure accurate up to date Standards are available and accessible to Ineos and contractor personnel.
  3. Develop and deliver mechanical engineering input to Procurement, Projects and TARs to ensure that new, modified and repaired equipment meets INEOS and legal standards. This to include:
Mechanical
  • Review of and response to Technical Queries or Deviations concerning mechanical items raised by Asset or Projects personnel
  • Code calculations / assessments including, the following codes;
    • Vessels PD5500 and ASME VIII
    • Boilers BS1113 and BSEN 12952
    • Pipework BS806, B31.3 and B31.1
    • Tanks BS2654 and API 650.
    • Pumps API610 and API682
      •   
      • Fitness for Service Calculations to API579/ASME FFS1.
      •   
      • Design of repairs to equipment included calculations and detail drawings.
      •   
      • Scopes of work to complete equipment repairs issued to contractors.
      •   
      • Low temperature assessments of pressure equipment.
      •   
      • Fatigue assessments of pressure equipment.
      •   
      • Specification of replacement equipment.
      •   
      • Rerating of existing equipment
      •   
      • Pump refurbishment i.e. Retrofitting dual cartridge seals
      •   
      • Design of lifting attachments for equipment removal.
Piping
  • Piping fitness for service calculations.
  • Pipework repair details.
  • Reduced wall thickness calculations.
  • Vibration analysis.
  • Pipe stressing calculation.
  • Dissimilar weld materials.
  • Change of duty.
  • Vessel nozzle checks.
  • Piping design review checks.
  • Material selection
  1. To manage receipt and response to Engineering Integrity requests Technical Queries or Deviations raised by the INEOS Integrity Services Manager or Asset Care Engineers, including delegation of actions to other relevant Technical Specialists      (normally off site) or package equipment vendors.
  2. Participate in the technical evaluations and compliance audits of mechanical vendors and service providers to provide assurance of competence and conformance to company, national standards and UK legislative requirements.
  3. Provide problem solving capability to emerging technical issues on mechanical plant and systems.
  4. Provide advice to assurance inspectors on any mechanical queries or issues arising.
  5. Provide review of monthly forecast expenditure of backlogged work for Technical support.
  6. Develop and sustain links within Ineos Group and with appropriate national industry organisations on mechanical technical issues.
  7. To work in accordance with INEOS standards and procedures.
Special Features
Grangemouth is a top tier COMAH site with a large Refinery, two large ethylene crackers and several other major petrochemicals processes. There is a large range of process technologies and chemical hazards to understand and many corrosion mechanisms to protect against. The remit of the Integrity Specialists team also includes Finnart, the cross country pipelines between Grangemouth and Finnart and the North East branch of the UK ethylene pipeline network.
The jobholder is the Site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Mechanical Engineering activities and will have a detailed knowledge of mechanical codes and standards.
The job holder will also have a working knowledge of quality management systems
The job holder is required to have detailed knowledge of petrochemical processes and equipment, materials, damage mechanisms and engineering codes and standards in order to deliver the role effectively.
The jobholder is regularly required to give mechanical engineering technical advice to support the Mechanical Technical Authority in important judgements and decisions relating to equipment manufacture and design acceptability to ensure its fitness for service. This involves providing advice and information on a wide range of discipline engineering topics such as legal duties and interpretation, repair options, inspection options, equipment condition concerns, long term fitness for service.
The jobholder provides mechanical engineering technical advice to support the Ineos Grangemouth Management System in meeting PED, PSSR, Pipeline Regulations and COMAH requirements.

Desired Skills and Experience

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
Chartered Engineer status from the Institute of Mechanical   Engineers (IMechE) preferred.
University Degree or equivalent in a Mechanical related discipline preferred.
Minimum of 5 years experience of refining & petrochemicals manufacturing operations, maintenance, design, fabrication, inspection and commissioning.
Thorough and detailed knowledge of Mechanical Codes and Standards.
Knowledge in Quality Management and Quality Control systems and processes and application of BS EN ISO 9001.
